So, why is artificial grass the right move for your garden? Let me explain a few things.

You don’t need to be a true Cornishman to be talking about the weather at the moment. It’s absolutely horrific. As I sit down to write this, I’ve just been looking at all the havoc that Storm Imogen has been causing right across the South West – people missing, all trains in and out of Cornwall cancelled, trees falling, cars crushed, 100mph winds, torrential rain, with the promise of more to come.

Half the county is on flood alert – the other half flooded already.

Needless to say, the devastation has been tremendous. Businesses and homes have been ruined, inside and out.

And if there’s one thing that’s certain about the weather is that we can be sure that we will experience similar conditions again (and again and again). Sure, we might not be able to say exactly when these conditions might be replicated – even with all the Met’s fancy equipment. But what we can say is that it will happen. Again and again and again.

We Can’t Escape The Cornish Weather…

And, when it does strike, the clean-up will once again be hard and laborious. Now, a bit of hard work certainly isn’t something the Cornish shy away from – but I do like to think that one of our greatest traits is that we learn from the past and prepare for the future. Prevention is better than cure no matter where you are in the world – and so the better we can be prepared to prevent a bit of future back-break the better.

Lawns, of course, are ruined by heavy weather. Ruined. Even if you’re lucky enough to live high above sea level and therefore leaving your home will largely “safe” from flooding, there is nothing that you can do about your turf lawn.

Unless, of course, you had the foresight to install artificial grass before the weather hit.

But We Can Prepare For It

Well, to be honest, the chances are if you’re reading this then you wouldn’t have done – but, nonetheless, there’s still time to be considering how you may prepare yourself and your home to withstand the ruinous downpours when they do come again. And they will come, be it next week, next month or next year.

But, protecting yourself from a future clean-up is by no means the only reason to lay down an investment in some artificial grass. On the contrary – there are plenty.

But, before we get into them, I think it’s important to clarify something.

The Environmental Beauties Of Modern Artificial Grass

Artificial grass has come an awful long way over the past decade or so. Once upon a time, it had very poor reputations for looking fake and being bad for the environment. Unfortunately, some of that bad press still lingers on, even though in 2016 this couldn’t further from the truth.

Indeed, artificial lawns have evolved so much that it’s practically impossible to tell them apart from real lawns unless you get on your hands and knees and look close up. What’s more, artificial grass is decidedly an extremely eco-friendly solution to all your gardening needs, and I’ll be highlighting the eco points with each benefit as we work down the list below. Here goes…

1.No Flooding

Floods happen. There’s nothing that we can do about that. And when the floods come like they have this year, they do more than just environmental damage – they also cause significant damage to your home and your property.

Down in Cornwall, it’s not uncommon for us to go through periods of extensive drought, only to be hit by heavy rain on any given day. And in this sense, artificial grass is the perfect solution. Innovative draining technology comes part and parcel with artificial lawns, which means that the water will always go where it needs to, no matter if the dry earth is too hard following a drought or not.

2.You Can Put The Mower On eBay

That’s right – artificial grass doesn’t grow. And since it doesn’t grow, it doesn’t need to be cut. Therefore, since it doesn’t need to be cut, you don’t need a motorised instrument to cut it. So, if you’re currently wasting your weekends either mowing lawns or cutting grass (no jokes about ‘Mo the grass’ being a Jewish informant, please), you can start dreaming of all the free time you’ll soon have right now if you switch to an artificial lawn. Indeed, you can even stick that lawnmower on eBay this evening and put the money towards your brand new never-cut-again lawn.

Eco points: No lawnmower means no lawnmower emissions – and no noise pollution either.

3. No More Watering

Grass that doesn’t grow doesn’t need watering in the dry summer months to stop it from drying out and turning hideously brown. Indeed, it always looks its lush green best no matter what time of the year it is. And, what’s more, those pesky hosepipe bans will no longer affect you. Amazing.

Eco points: Lets be frank here – one of the biggest wastes of water has to be from watering the lawn. At the end of the day, we water the grass for aesthetic reasons only – it’s an indulgence that the planet could probably do without. So, with an artificial lawn you will be doing your bit and cutting down on water waste.

4. Less Maintenance, Less Back-break

When the weather’s hot and the sun is high – what would you rather be doing? Breaking your back fixing the lawn, or lying on it with a bottle of Betty Stogs or a cocktail? I know what I’d rather be doing – but unfortunately, if you’ve got a real lawn, then you’re going to have to take advantage of all the sunshine that comes your way to see to the grass.

True Cornish weather is an unpredictable beast – but, if the last ten years or so are anything to go by, then you can be fairly certain that the hottest time of the year (July and August) is also going to be the wettest. And so, when a dry day does come along, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just get the barbecue out and enjoy it? It was an absolute steal when you bought it from Trago back in 2007 – but how many times have you actually had the opportunity to fire it up? Make 2016 the year to put that right.

5. No Feeding, Seeding, Or Fertilizing

With an artificial lawn, you don’t have to worry about seeding those areas that succumb to heavy footfall and wear thin. Indeed, those patches that the pets love, or take a battering from the kids playing or from garden furniture – artificial lawns are impervious to all such things. And this, yet again, means that you’ll save yourself hours and hours of work and stress across a lifetime – you may even live longer as a result!

Eco points: Eco points are handed out once again here due to the fact that artificial grass doesn’t need to be fertilized. And this absolutely guarantees that planet Earth will not have to suffer any more chemical sprinklings from you. And that, in turn means that you won’t have to worry about those chemicals running off in rainy weather, and subsequently finding their way into drains, rivers, lakes and seas.

6. Long Term Cost Savings

Artificial grass is more than a purchase – it’s an investment. Indeed, since you won’t ever have to worry about flooding, watering, mowing, seeding, fertilising or otherwise maintaining your lawn again, you will be saving money here, there and everywhere right from the moment you purchase your brand new lawn for the rest of your days.

7.Safe For Children, Dogs And Pets

An artificial lawn is safe for your little ones and their pets – and it’s also safe from them as well. So, not only do you no longer have to worry about allergies and hay fever putting a stop to all the fun, you can also rest assured that your lawn won’t get ruined from even the roughest play.

Eco points: Green points have to be awarded here for the fact that no allergies mean that everyone can go outside, get some fresh air and enjoy the sunshine – and that’s just better for the whole family’s health.

8.No More Mud Or Grass Stains

Following on from the last point, you will know that there’s nothing more frustrating than an afternoon’s frolicking in the back garden coming to a sour end when the children or the dog comes in and patters muddy footprints all over the house. All of a sudden the mood drops, tempers flare, and the scrubbing brush comes out.

And the same goes for impossible-to-remove grass stains on favourite clothes – summer days are ruined by such things.

But of course, with artificial grass, there is no mud and there is no (real) grass, and so there are no stains (or tears before bedtime).

Eco points: the less washing we have to do, the better it is for the environment. Less electricity and fewer chemicals – it’s a win-win-win situation.

9.Increase Property Value

What do people look for when property hunting? That’s right, a well-kept, beautifully preserved and presentable garden. And there’s no doubt about it – artificial grass looks great all year round, so if the time ever comes when you decide to sell your house, your gorgeous, lush-green garden will add value to your home, even in the coldest months.

10.Long Lasting

An artificial lawn can last for anywhere between 15 and 35 years. Just think about that. 35 years without having to worry about flooding, watering, feeding, mowing, fertilising, maintaining, grass stains, mud stains or your pets and children ruining your beautiful garden? Now that’s a bargain.

Eco points: your long term investment in artificial grass is also a long term investment in the environment. For every single eco point that we’ve picked up here in this list, you can multiply by the amount of years your artificial lawn lasts. Now that really is something special.
